We have bought Harry & David's Royal Riviera pears for years both to enjoy ourselves and to give as gifts. We and the gift recipients have raved about the taste and quality of the pears. In the past we have bought the pears late in the year for our use and as Christmas gifts. However, we recently [February 2012] bought a box for ourselves and one as a gift. We noticed that these pears were not a tasty as usual and didn't understand why. They also took much longer to ripen. Then i noticed on the box that these pears were grown in Chile. We buy fruit from Chile on occasion so we have nothing against the country or its produce. However, be aware that if you buy Royal Riviera pears after the U.S. growing season is over you may be getting a genetically identical pear but one that is of lower quality than those grown in the U.S.

I receive these as a part of a gift package for Christmas and while my Mom was visiting from Iowa (I'm in AZ). She loved them so I sent them for Mother's Day along with flowers (which arrived the day after the pears). Her comment - "I thought I was in Heaven when I opened the pears. They were a touch green yet, but I ate a whole one anyway. They are SO delicious." She called again when she got the flowers but was still raving about the pears. "The flowers are beautiful but I really prefer the PEARS!!!". What a hit - score one for the daughter!!

I disagree with the customer who didn't like the out-of-the-country pears. I recently sent a box to myself (in May)and they were so juicy they slipped out of my hands when I was peelig them. Perhaps she didn't care for the thicker skin on them, but that is easily fixed. Peel them!

This item was offered as a Mother's Day gift for Mother's Day only with a gift box to match. Although this is not that gift set it was this same product. If there was ever a heaven on earth then you'll find it in these pears.

I love that one was fully ripe when the box arrived so that I could start enjoying them right away. I would bring them out one at a time from the fridge so that they did not all get ripe at the same time. They were so juicy that it just dripped juice all down my arm while eating it.

I ordered these for myself--I always send Harry & David gifts at Christmas, but sometimes I crave these pears and have to buy some for myself. The day after they arrived they were perfectly ripe and I didn't think I'd be able to eat them all before they got over-ripe, so I took them in to work as a healthy treat for my colleagues while we sat in on a videoconference. Good thing I brought in a stack of paper towels, because they were super-juicy. The pears were a huge hit!

Refrigerate the box and pull one out each day. Keeps them from all being ready at the same time, but they are really best at room temperature.
