In the 1940's Pietro Ferrero of Alba, in the mountainous region of Piemonte of northwest Italy, started a small confection shop specializing in chocolates combined with the area's abundant hazelnuts.  His son Michele created a piece that would grow to be one of the most sought after chocolates worldwide by combining  rich, silky milk chocolate and delicate wafers to create the now world famous, Ferrero Rocher.
