We always find the Cookin’ Canuck’s healthy recipes and stories inspiring, so we were eager to hear about her adventure with our Halloween Caramel Apple Kit. Here’s what she had to say.

It seems almost impossible that I have lived this long without ever making Halloween caramel apples. Sure, I’ve bought them at candy stores and happily enjoyed one or two at friends’ Halloween parties, but I have never been a part of the process. This means that my two boys have never made DIY caramel apples either. And all three of us are feeling like we’ve missed out on an awesome Halloween tradition.

So when the Harry & David® Halloween Caramel Apple Kit arrived on my doorstep last week, there was quite a bit of excitement. The box and the contents inside were so beautiful that I almost didn’t want to take it apart, but my boys had other ideas.

Like good witches and goblins, we set to work, following the instructions on the “Spell” sheet. I melted the caramels while the boys pushed the sticks into the crisp, shiny apples and emptied the mini chocolate candies and roasted cashews into bowls.

And then the fun began. We rolled the apples in the melted caramels, rolled them again in the chocolate candies, and pressed as many cashews into the caramel as the apples could take.

We were thrilled with the taste of the mini chocolate candies and the roasted cashews, but if you want to change things up a little, here are some other add-on ideas:

  • Granola
  • Moose Munch® Gourmet Popcorn
  • Marshmallows
  • Crushed graham crackers
  • Chopped dried cherries
  • Chocolate chips
  • Sprinkles
  • Drizzled frosting
  • Crushed cookies

They were some of the best caramel apples I have ever tasted, my boys had a ball, and one thing became abundantly clear:  We will be making caramel apples together every year!
