Our series “Whisk” offers sage advice on becoming a better home chef by using the best ingredients, tools, and techniques. Learn how to cut a pineapple like a pro with help from Kellie Hemmerly of The Suburban Soapbox.

Pineapple is a versatile and delicious fruit that’s almost as sweet to look at as it is to eat. It’s tropical, fun, and refreshing, not to mention great in a variety of recipes (and makes for fantastic house plants!). However, knowing the proper — and safe — way to cut a pineapple is not necessarily intuitive. The pineapple’s large and spiky appearance can make even the sharpest chef’s knife feel insignificant. But don’t give up! There are several ways to slice up this succulent, oval fruit. With a little practice, you can learn how to cut a pineapple in no time.

Before you begin any of the cutting methods below, start by doing the following:

  1. Cut off the top and bottom of the pineapple.
  2. Stand the pineapple on its end and slice the rind off.
  3. Lay the pineapple on its side.
  4. Carefully use your knife to remove the eyes (the brown markings on the pineapple’s surface) by cutting in a wedge fashion, aiming your knife inward on each side of the eye.
  5. Stand the pineapple on its end again and cut in half.

After that…well, read on to find out.
